WHAT IS FORMAL RECRUITMENT?

PanhellenicPhotos-35.jpg

Formal Recruitment is a structured process designed to introduce potential new members to the sororities on campus. At the University of Delaware, Formal Recruitment occurs in the spring semester and lasts several days. During this period, participants have the opportunity to visit each of the 12 sororities through a series of organized events. These events allow potential new members to meet current sorority members, learn about the chapter’s unique values, traditions, and sisterhood, and see what life is like in each sorority. Formal Recruitment is organized as a mutual selection process, meaning both the sororities and the potential new members rank their preferences. At the end of the process, these preferences are matched, and new members are invited to join a sorority on Bid Day, a special event where the results are announced, and new members officially become part of their chosen chapter.

WHAT FORMAL RECRUITMENT LOOKS LIKE

We are so excited that you are interested in participating in Spring Primary Sorority Recruitment at the University of Delaware. The University of Delaware, Office of Fraternity and Sorority Leadership & Learning, and the Panhellenic Council at The University of Delaware are committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive campus environment characterized by access and opportunity for all.

The recruitment process at the University of Delaware is designed to help potential new members (PNMs) find a sorority that aligns with their values, interests, and goals. This structured process is broken down into several rounds, each with its unique focus and purpose, culminating in Bid Day, where new members are officially invited to join a sorority.

WHAT IS VALUES BASED RECRUITMENT?

Values-Based Recruitment is a recruitment approach that focuses on finding new members whose personal values align with those of the sorority chapters. Instead of prioritizing superficial characteristics, this method emphasizes meaningful conversations and connections. During Values-Based Recruitment, potential new members and sorority members discuss important topics such as scholarship, leadership, community service, and personal growth. The goal is to ensure that new members join a chapter that reflects their personal beliefs, goals, and interests. This approach helps create stronger, more genuine bonds between members and fosters a more fulfilling and supportive sorority experience for everyone involved. It ensures that the sorority experience is based on shared principles and values, making it a rewarding and enriching part of college life.

VALUES ROUND

The first round of recruitment is the Values Round. During this initial stage, PNMs visit all 12 sororities in brief sessions. The primary focus of these visits is to introduce the core values and principles that each sorority upholds. Conversations during this round are centered on what each chapter stands for and how these values are demonstrated in their members' daily lives. This round is essential for PNMs to get a sense of which sororities share their personal values and beliefs.

PHILANTHROPY ROUND

The second round, known as Philanthropy Round, allows PNMs to learn about the charitable causes and community service projects that each sorority supports. Each chapter presents their philanthropic activities and the impact they have on the community and beyond. This round helps PNMs understand the philanthropic commitments of each sorority and see how they can contribute to meaningful causes while being part of a chapter.

SISTERHOOD ROUND

The third round is the Sisterhood Round, where PNMs get a deeper look into the social and personal aspects of each sorority. This round highlights the bonds of friendship and the supportive community that each chapter offers. Sorority members share personal stories and experiences that illustrate the strength of their sisterhood. This round is crucial for PNMs to gauge the sense of community and support they can expect if they join a particular chapter.

PREFERENCE ROUND

The fourth and final round before Bid Day is the Preference Round. During this stage, PNMs visit their top two sorority choices for longer, more intimate sessions. This round is more serious and emotional, as it often involves deeper conversations about the impact of the sorority experience on members' lives. Sororities might share rituals or traditions that are special to their chapter. This round helps PNMs make a final decision about which sorority they feel most connected to.

BID DAY

After the Preference Round, PNMs submit their final preferences, and sororities do the same. Bid Day is the final event of the recruitment process, where PNMs receive invitations (bids) to join a sorority. This day is filled with excitement and celebration as new members are welcomed into their chosen chapters. Bid Day marks the beginning of their journey in the sorority, where they will form lasting friendships, engage in leadership opportunities, and contribute to their community.
